The Project

The proposed development comprises of the construction of multi-storey data halls, generator rooms and gantry assemblies. The site is already under construction. While the Shell E proposed development comprises minor external and building alterations and additions to the approved SYD 2 data centre – Shell E, including adjustments to site layout, removal and reconfiguration of tanks, parking and structures, and an increase in the quantity of lithium-ion batteries.

The Challenges

Lithium-ion batteries and diesel storage are a key fire safety risk and may trigger special hazard considerations, higher FRL separation requirements and close FRNSW scrutiny.

Lot boundary/fire source feature issues due to the building spanning multiple allotments, creating potential non-compliances around FRLs, opening protection, egress routes crossing boundaries and shared services.

Multiple Performance Solutions required, particularly for slab edge protection, oversized gantry compartmentation, FRL rationalisation, extended travel distances, reduced egress widths, sprinkler coverage, hydrant booster location and security-controlled egress from data halls.
